Contract Archivist Position

Full-Time, 3-Year Term 


Los Jardines Institute based in Albuquerque, NM works on Environmental, Economic, & Food Justice. The founders of Los Jardines have decades of experience in social justice struggles and the Institute reflects and promotes this history of work in its historical intersectional social justice work, programming, and documentation.  


The Institute invites applications for a full-time Archivist to support the preservation and accessibility of the organization’s historical collections. This position focuses on Environmental Justice initiatives and New Mexico grassroots activism, including efforts that led to the creation of the first healthcare clinics in the state.


The Archivist will play a key role in retrieving, managing, organizing, and preserving archival materials while assisting to ensuring their long-term accessibility for research, education, and public engagement. This is a three-year appointment.


Responsibilities

  • Retrieve, manage, organize, and maintain archival collections, including documents, photographs, audiovisual, and digital records. 
  • Develop and implement policies and procedures for the acquisition, appraisal, preservation, and access of archival materials. 
  • Ensure the physical and digital preservation of materials in accordance with professional standards and best practices. 
  • Catalog and index collections, creating metadata and finding aids to facilitate discovery and access. 
  • Oversee and coordinate the digitization of archival materials. 
  • Conduct research and respond to internal and external inquiries related to the archives. 
  • Support organizational initiatives by providing historical context and documentation. 
  • Plan and organize public programs, presentations, and exhibitions, particularly in the third year of the project. 
  • Perform other archival and collections-related duties as needed to support the mission of Los Jardines Institute. 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Archival Science, History, Library Science, or a related field. 
  • Demonstrated experience in archival management and records stewardship. 


Preferred Qualification

  • Knowledge of archival principles, practices, and standards (e.g., ISAD(G), DACS). 
  • Experience with archival management systems and digital asset management tools. 
  • Strong organizational, research, and communication skills. 
  • Knowledge of New Mexico history, with emphasis on environmental justice, public health, and grassroots movements. 
  • Master’s or Ph.D. in History, Library/Information Science, Archival Studies, or a related field.
